William Stout Architectural Books
Since 2003, the colorful spines of architecture books and the promise of hours of uninterrupted browsing have beckoned David Charette to William Stout Architectural Books in San Francisco. But the biggest draw? Bill Stout himself.
“Bill knows his books. And I love that he has created a bookstore that feels like academia and resembles an architect’s studio. When I visit, I’m transported back to my university days. The bookstore has all the textures and layers of a university library and Bill is that librarian you always sought out for the answers. The person who knew everything.”

And it’s not simply the books that have caught our team’s attention. “Jay and I were inspired by the bookstore’s built environment so we incorporated elements of it in our own office design,” says David. “Our library of vendor samples forms an entire wall of our studio and can be reached with a track ladder similar to the one found at Bill’s.”

“Bill really has considered every element, from the nameplate and signage to the front door. There are nods to Frank Lloyd Wright and the entire space has the feel of a working architect’s studio. I feel inspired every time I visit.” –David Charette
